United States downs Japan 7-1 in Day 1 of women's world hockey championship

BRAMPTON, Ont. - Alex Carpenter scored twice and added an assist to lead the United States past Japan 7-1 on Wednesday in the first day of play at the women's world hockey championship.

Hilary Knight had a goal and two assists for the U.S., in her first-ever game as the Americans' captain. Megan Keller, Hannah Bilka, Taylor Heise and Abbey Murphy rounded out the attack.
