The watchdog said police reportedly established a safety perimeter and tried to make contact, but the individual did not comply. 

The man left the residence with a firearm and was shot and seriously injured by officers before being taken to the hospital, where he later died, police watchdog said.

The oversight agency automatically investigates when a person is killed, seriously injured, or shot with a police firearm.

Five police watchdog investigators have been assigned, and the bureau is asking witnesses to come forward.

The town of Saint-Raphaël is approximately 40 kilometres east of Quebec City.
