Hydro One, the provincial utility, said it was assessing the damage after a small fire at a transmission station near Dundas and Bay streets, and repairs to the equipment will continue over the coming days. 

No major impacts were reported at two Toronto hospitals in the affected area.

The Hospital for Sick Children said it briefly lost power before it was restored, while the Toronto General Hospital website said there were no widespread patient care impacts as it dealt with the outage.

Staff and students at Toronto Metropolitan University's downtown campus were told to evacuate due to the power failure, with fire detection and sprinkler systems inside the buildings potentially knocked off-line.
