MOMBASA - Astraeus O'Levin is tired of strangers telling her they want to kill her.

In 2015, as a transgender woman, she left the scrutiny of her family in western Kenya, seeking peace and new opportunities in the tourism sector in the eastern coastal city of Mombasa.

Debbie Owusu-Akyeeah, an LGBTQ+ activist in Ottawa, says people with ties to other countries can help advocate for human rights abroad. She says Ghana’s large diaspora in Canada can help craft policies and messages that advance LGBTQ+ rights in the country, which this year passed a bill that bans identifying as gay. (Nov. 29, 2024)
