Peel Region police say a man has been charged after they recovered nearly $1 million in stolen goods in a months-long retail theft investigation in Mississauga, Ont.
Police say a masked suspect broke into a store at Square One Shopping Centre and stole valuable jewelry and clothing from several displays on April 30.
They say the 41-year-old man fled the scene before stealing an idling vehicle that had been left unattended.Â
Police say they identified the suspect and recovered a significant quantity of stolen goods after searching his home.Â
Investigators say the suspect has been charged with several offences, including possession of break-in instruments, disguise with intent and theft of motor vehicle.Â
He remains in custody pending a bail hearing.Â
Peel police Deputy Chief Marc Andrews said retail theft leaves a huge impact on businesses and the entire community.Â
“Incidents like this not only result in financial loss but undermine the sense of safety for those who live and work in our region,†Andrews said in a news release Friday. “Through proactive, intelligence-led policing, we are taking decisive action to disrupt organized retail crime and hold offenders accountable.â€Â
Director and general manager of Square One Shopping Centre, Stephen Gascoine, said the arrest sends a “clear message that organized retail crime has no place in our community.â€
The investigation continues and police are asking anyone with information to come forward.
