RJBHALIFAX - Two people charged following the recent discovery of a newborn’s remains near Halifax appeared briefly in court Monday via a video link.
Sukhpreet Singh, 23, and his 26-year-old wife Ramandeep Kaur were originally charged with concealing the body of a child, obstructing a peace officer and causing an indignity to human remains.
They were also charged Monday with obstructing justice and were returned to custody pending a bail hearing on Thursday in Halifax.
Halifax Regional Police say officers were dispatched to a hospital on Friday night after a 23-year-old woman arrived in poor condition and doctors determined she had recently given birth. But the child was nowhere to be found, prompting an immediate search.
The identify of the mother was not released but police confirmed she is related to Sukhpreet Singh.
Police said the woman was in critical condition Sunday. Investigators said it appeared she had suffered a medical emergency that was not linked to violence.
The search for the newborn started at a residence on Willett Street in the city’s west end.
Police said that after receiving new information, the search resumed Sunday in wooded area southwest of downtown, where searchers found the infant’s remains at 3:20 p.m.
Four people known to the woman were initially taken into custody for questioning on Saturday but two were released without charges.
The Nova Scotia Medical Examiner Service has been called in to conduct an autopsy to determine the cause and manner of death.
