CALGARY - Calgary Mayor Jeromy Farkas says he believes past and present councillors -- including former mayor Joyti Gondek -- are not at the centre of an ongoing police investigation after some of their devices were seized by officers.
Current Ward 10 councillor Andre Chabot said he was subject to a search warrant and is co-operating with police.聽
A lawyer for former Ward 4 councillor Sean Chu said a judicial order was "apparently" executed and his client has been co-operative.
Gondek told 国产诱惑福利 in a statement Wednesday evening, "I've been fully co-operative and respect the legal process. At the same time, this has been very invasive, and my lawyer and I will be reviewing it closely to ensure it was justified." She also confirmed that a search warrant was executed and her cellphone seized.
"My understanding at this point is that no member of council, past or present, is the target of an investigation," Farkas told reporters Wednesday.
"However, certain evidence that they may have, in terms of text messages or emails they receive, are being submitted to the RCMP to be able to support the investigation of a third party."
Farkas added that he doesn't have access to more information than is publicly available.
Gondek, Chabot and Chu were a part of the most recent former council from 2021 to 2025, but have had varying tenures on council before the 2021 civic election.
In a statement to CTV, Gondek said she has been co-operative and respects the legal process.
鈥淎t the same time, this has been very invasive, and my lawyer and I will be reviewing it closely to ensure it was justified," she said.
Chabot said he provided some of his devices to police as part of a search warrant. He added he's unaware of the reason for the investigation.
He said he wasn't contacted by RCMP before the warrant was executed, hasn't been questioned by officers and doesn't believe he's being investigated.
Defence lawyer Alain Hepner said Chabot is being co-operative "and has nothing to hide."
Lawyer Shamsher Kothari said Chu has also co-operated with police and respects the legal process.
"No charges have been laid and I look forward to a swift conclusion of this investigation," Kothari wrote in an emailed statement.
RCMP said it's investigating after receiving a referral from the Calgary Police Service in October.
It had no comment on who has been the subject of search warrants and why.
