Teck and Joly
Industry Minister Mélanie Joly is expected to meet with the chief executives of Teck Resources Ltd. and Anglo American PLC this week about their proposed merger. Joly has suggested she doesn't think the promises made by the companies go far enough for her to grant the necessary approvals.
Macklem speech
Bank of Canada governor Tiff Macklem will give a speech in Saskatoon on Tuesday. The central bank cut its key interest rate by a quarter of a percentage point last week to 2.5 per cent as it worries less about inflation and more about a slowing economy.
BlackBerry earnings
BlackBerry Ltd. is set to report its second-quarter results before markets open on Thursday. In its outlook earlier this year, the company said it expected revenue for its second quarter to total between US$115 million and US$125 million.
GDP figures
Statistics Canada will release its figures for gross domestic product for July on Friday. The agency's advance estimate released last month had pointed to an increase of 0.1 per cent for the month. Real gross domestic product edged down 0.1 per cent in June.
Solomon speech
Artificial Intelligence Minister Evan Solomon gives a speech to the Empire Club of Canada on Friday about how Canada can secure its place as a leader in AI and quantum technology. A recent poll suggested that an overwhelming majority of Canadians are in favour of regulating artificial intelligence.
