WASHINGTON - United States Trade Representative Jamieson Greer says he doesn't expect negotiations on the Canada-U.S.-Mexico Agreement on trade to be resolved by July 1.
That's the required deadline for the United States to notify its neighbours about its plans for the trilateral trade pact, known as CUSMA.
The CUSMA review sets up a three-way choice for each country.
They can renew the deal for another 16 years, withdraw from it or signal both non-renewal and non-withdrawal — which triggers an annual review that could keep negotiations going for up to a decade.
Speaking at the Washington-based Hudson Institute today, Greer says the Trump administration is looking to resolve trade issues quickly but it's unlikely the agreement will get the rubber stamp in July.
The Trump administration began its formal negotiations with Mexico last month, but official talks between Canada and the United States have not launched.Â
