AMHERST NOVA SCOTIA - Police in northern Nova Scotia are investigating a shooting that claimed the life of a man in Amherst.
Investigators with the Amherst Police Department say those responsible remain at large, but they say police have no reason to believe there is any risk to the public.
The shooting was reported just before 7 p.m. Monday night after residents told police they heard a loud bang from Prince Arthur Street.
A man suffering from a single gunshot wound was found lying on the ground in that area.
"Those responsible fled the scene in a vehicle after the incident," the police department said in a statement. "Shortly afterwards, the victim was pronounced deceased at the hospital."
Meanwhile, the Cumberland Homelessness and Housing Support Association issued a statement confirming the shooting happened near its shelter on Prince Arthur Street.
“Staff and guests … were not involved in the incident, however are deeply impacted by the proximity to our shelter,†the association’s acting chairperson, Sarah Flemming, said in a statement posted on social media.
“We are deeply grateful to first responders for their swift action, and we are ensuring supports are in place for those impacted.â€Â
The police department's major crime unit has been called in, but police did not release any other details.
